Coming down the platform of the Imperial Shuttle, I was number 1 on the right side.
There were no ranks. I could be the 10th and still stand by the Emperor. I could be the 100th and still be caught in the line of fire to save the Emperor's life.
Long gone were the days at Yinchorr.
When the battleground was mere platform above a never ending pit.
When the failure wasn't acceptable amidst the elite we represented. Even then we were a number... But that wasn't so among us...
When we made friends in the barracks. When we shed blood in fearsome training jousts that seemed stages for hatred. Were friends were no more... We were brothers.
Even so, our duty went beyond blood ties or feelings. We were faceless. We were heartless.
As I reached my mark I turned to face the middle the fellow mate in front of me. The Emperor should pass amidst us. All the others repeated my exact move and we stood 5 on the right and 5 on the left, in a royal corridor.
Not even a whisper would pass through us without our knowledge.
Then the Emperor appeared from the shuttle. A tired old man, that emanated a power I couldn't understand. Alongside him was the other faceless servant, since the Jedi's end, Darth Vader.
While in Yinchorr he was the one who made sure only the best served at my post. Several times did I see him using his Force powers and light saber to trespass some of my brothers just because he felt they weren't fit.
Until today I can defy him. He killed the best among us. Somehow Vader feared one of us would take his place at the Emperor's right side... He knew it, I knew it... the Emperor knew it...
Still we were above any other Imperial Soldier. Even Vader, the emperor trusted us to protect him even from his most loyal Sith lord.
We were trained not to shoot weapons or throw a detonator... Not to stand neatly in formation or guard some outpost... We were the Elite in every aspect.
There was no room for failure. There was perfection.

This day the Emperor was inspecting the famous Outpost 34.
Standing in the front I started to walk behind him and Vader while the others followed.
Aside us all the Clone Troopers and Officers were standing in a perfect formation while the Emperor inspected them.
There was something wrong, though. In one of the lines, the second, there was a soldier with a different posture. As if staring at the Emperor directly. True defiance.
I noticed it before the Emperor, Vader or any of my brother Guards could...
Without making it visible I switched the power of my Force Pike to make a stand at any sign.
The trooper seemed to be predicting the Emperor's footsteps as if preparing for is passage.
He made a move I couldn't quite figure the end of it, but I wasn't going to wait and see.
He stepped forward and was screaming "The Republic lives!" and aimed his blaster.
But before he could pull the trigger, my Pike was hitting his arm making his shot miss the Emperor.
He was surprised to see me, but didn't stand down.
Taking advantage of the confusion, he pushed the trooper in front of him towards me and ran to the Emperor.
I avoided the trooper and jumped to his legs and grabbed his foot. He fought to set himself free, but I grabbed my blaster and pointed at his helmet,
He felt it and stopped.
All the other troopers were confused and didn't act in those split seconds.
When he tried to grab my blaster and I didn't hesitate and shot him point blank.
The attack was over.
Palpatine was evacuated to a safe location with Vader, who, by now, had his light saber ignited.
I took the helmet of the trooper to reveal a faceless foe. Perhaps a Rebel.
The Imperial Marines isolated the area and took his body quickly to make sure there was no more concealed threats.
As I raised from the ground I had a smile hidden underneath my mask.
A job well done.
It was then that I heard a muffled sound of someone calling for help.
I looked around to see my fellow guards on stand at the door the Emperor was taken safely.
They were 8. They were all looking at were I was standing.
I was intrigued with the reason why they stared at me, and then I realized something. There was one missing.
Looking at my side I saw two marines crouched over a fallen soldier. To my agony he was dressed in red. One of my brothers.
He was shot by the rebel's gun. That shot didn't miss Palpatine. It was stopped by this heroic brother.
He was crying in pain, the shot missed the armor and hit him in the chest.
I told him powerful words, but they sounded mechanical and senseless. "Hang in there!", "Remember your training".
By now the hangar had been evacuated and the troopers dispersed.
I saw the internal Physician Lieutenant Sweshar reach for my brother.
The blood was mixed with the red of his cloak.
They took his helmet, his identity, off to treat him... I saw his face for the first time and he was staring at me in terror.
So much training to end like this... I could almost read his eyes...
The crying suddenly stopped.
Sweshar looked at me and nodded.
The brother was no more.
I was then startled to hear the powerful voice of Darth Vader above me.
-He took his life for the Emperor. Deserves the best honors.
Indeed. Somehow Vader seemed to respect this man...
This was Vader's idea of loyalty. My brother did his job... He was committed to his duty. He gave his life to the cause.

But even when I was debriefed and honored for my courageous action, I couldn't stop thinking that I was guilty of his death.
But I had to set it aside.
I had a much greater duty to fulfill...
I had the Emperor to protect...
I was an Imperial Royal Guard...
