“Master, please…” Padawan Jayna Ran begged while her hand slowly slipped from the lack of grip… The large stone that was keeping her from falling to the precipice was now sliding with the weight of the young woman. “Master…” She begged again.
Above her, in higher ground, her Master Sly Roanur, stared with sheer boredom. He looked at her as if nothing was happening and knelt before her blood-red hands, carving the ground for grip. “Are you begging, my apprentice?” He asked in a calm voice, clearly in contrast with the whole situation. He wasn't making fun. He was just too tired to care.
Jayna couldn’t help but scream in pain as her muscles were giving up and se literally fought for her life. This was no longer a test. The sore arms were now the only anchors of her life. Her bloody fingers couldn’t sustain so much pain… not much further. “Master, help me…”
“You do not require my help to be rescued” He calmly said, “You have a choice to make now… either quit or use the Force to climb up to safe ground”.
She continued to grasp any piece of firm ground she could. For a second, she looked down to the precipice and saw the ground so many kilometers down. Death.
Jayna tried to concentrate in reaching the Force. But the pain was too intense. She cried out once more “Master, I beg you, help me…”
“Don’t let fear cloud your thoughts!” Roanur’s voice became serious and no longer calm. There was a trace of frustration, “I sense much fear in you, Padawan!” He rose to his feet and walked away.
Jayna couldn’t believe it. He was a Master Jedi...
She felt something grow in her. At first, she was just incredulous then her thoughts turned to the sense of uselessness of the Jedi teachings towards the present scenario. But then she felt cold and humiliated...
She felt her hands loosing the last remnants of grip and the large stone was now clearly sliding down. Jayna believed these were her last moments. She filled her lungs with hate, as she gained speed towards the precipice.
Master Roanur, never looked back. He needn’t. He felt everything with the Force.
He let go a sigh, as if understanding the inevitable.
But then, he felt the Force twitch and stir.
Looking behind, he saw Jayna rising above the edge of the precipice, using the Force to levitate and land a few meters from him.
Roanur finally walked back to her and saw her kneeling, clearly regaining strength.
“You finally understood the power of the Force and how you need no one or nothing else” The Master smiled, “You are becoming strong with the Force, my Padawan…” He place his hand on her dusty shoulder.
Jayna was standing very still and breathing heavily. Roanur was trying to see through her feelings, but the Force was making him confused. He had trouble understanding what she felt. Still he trusted his own teachings. “You will become very powerful with the Force. You just needed to fully understand it and see that you mustn’t depend so much on others to support you.”
Jayna finally spoke “You are right, Master! I did feel the Force from a different perspective…”
She suddenly stretched her hand and using the Force, Roanur’s lightsaber swiftly travelled from his belt to her hand and, as quickly, ignited in Roanur’s lower torso. He screamed in both pain and the sudden surge of Dark Side that surrounded him.
“You were also right in the notion that I needn’t you…”
Roanur grasped her throat in a desperate attempt to kill her.
Even with the Force, she was still weak and needed to act fast. She reached the Force once more as the Master’s strength halted the blood to her brain. His eyes transmitted the intense pain he felt.
When Jayna finally focused, she opened her eyes and couldn’t help but grin at the idea she felt the power of the Dark Side. She controlled her movements to a steady Force driven movement with the Lightsaber, in an upwards direction, cutting her Master’s hands. So intense was the blow, that her Master fell painfully on his back.
“Jayna… don’t give in to the Dark Side…“ He spat blood from his mouth and rose to his knees fighting the pain from his wounded abdomen.
“There was but one thing I don’t know if you were right… that I would become powerful with the Force…” She made a smooth but decisive movement to thrust the saber with both hands. It stopped when it was carved into her Master’s chest, killing him.
“That you won’t be able to see…” She added in a low tone, as the Master’s eyes rolled to the final rest.
When the adrenaline faded away, so did the Force. She felt the pain of her bloody hands and fingers return. Her neck was also sore, but the pain she felt from it came from the heart, as she remembered her Master’s dying face.
She switched the lightsaber off and looked down at the dead body. Closing her eyes, she used the Force one last time do throw the body down the precipice.
Her grave was now his.
She felt the urge to jump too. But she decided to live another day.
Jayna would see if her Master was truly right… And the Force would be strong with her.
