The round room was so shiny and so clean, Daryan had to look carefully not leave his own footprints. It was an exaggerated thought, of course, since his boots were clean as was his whole Jedi outfit.
Around the predominantly brown colored room, twelve empty seats, but one. Master Yoda sat in the one located right in front of the main entrance and watched Daryan very carefully, beyond sight, through the Force.
“Something to say you have, Master Sev?” Master Yoda said softly, breaking the nerve wrecking silence.
Daryan suddenly felt the urge to look down, like a child accused of misbehaving. His doubts were engulfing his mind, so much that words and phrases were hard to construct.
“Master, I am having trouble accepting these dark times…” Daryan finally said, “We’ve sworn to seek and maintain peace, yet we feed the war by driving innocent men into battle. Men that were literally built to kill.”
Yoda said nothing. He looked outside through the large windows that overlooked the busy Coruscant, as if he was listening to something.
“Feel their suffering, I do…” He said, while closing his eyes, “But even more pain comes from those oppressed by the Separatists!”
“Master, I don’t intend to defend any political side, but aren’t the Separatist intentions noble? To remove the hypocrisy and corruption of the political medium?” Daryan said softly, knowing he was risking his own position as Jedi Master. But if there was someone wise to fully understand his words was Master Yoda.
“Noble, they could be, but shrouded by evil they are! Remember the Dark Side of the Force every strategy of their fleet and army surrounds. Still to be discovered is the Dark Lord of the Sith…”
“And while we wait, must all those Clone Troopers die because the battle is against the Jedi? Couldn’t this be resolved in the Senate? With agreements?”
“Long passed are the times of negotiation. As we speak, form alliances with Dooku, more and more systems do.” Yoda leaned forward, “More and more Jedi join him as well”.
“It’s nothing like that, Master Yoda!” Daryan felt the chill down his spine, of course this could be interpreted as treason thoughts, “I am simply worried of the lives we lose, including Jedi Knights formed Generals who can only rely on the Force for guidance. Most of the times, the Clone Commanders guide the troops, not an inexperienced Padawan…”
“Time to teach, we do not have. On the battlefield they gain experience.” Yoda, lowered his head, “understand this, I did. Resolve, I could not!”
“Master! We need to talk to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and explain that the Jedi can’t prolong this war any further! There could be a time when even the citizens may turn against us!”
Yoda was silent again. Yet! This time, his silence wasn’t of contemplation but of lack of response. It would appear that a question had been made, but the answer was elusive. Daryan understood that there was nothing the great Jedi Master could do. And that scared him the most.
“We’re confined to the will of politics. The Clones are confined to their initial genetic programming. How long do you believe we can keep this charade, Master?” Daryan felt defiance taking over. It wasn’t the lure of the Dark Side, as he saw it. It was just his feelings, and Yoda understood.
“Those questions… many have made! Shrouded by the Dark Side we are. Losing he ability to interpret the Force the Council his…” Yoda confessed.
“Then the dark times are truly coming…” Daryan murmured.
“To Palpatine take this, we must not. The promise to hunt and capture Dooku and Grievous we must keep! Then no reason will war have to continue.”
“Are you so sure, Master Yoda? Is the Jedi Council willing to bet the lives of Jedi and Clones against the promises of a politician who have won so much since the war begun?”
“Hard to see, the future is… Trust we must have on those who didn’t fail the Council in the past!” Yoda said, observing Daryan’s reaction looking deeply into his eyes, “Defy this resolution you wish, Master Sev?”
Daryan understood the message. He trusted Yoda to do the right thing. In the end, however, he couldn’t turn his appreciation against the Jedi Council or any particular Jedi if the whole made him suspicious. He chose caution. But he would stand down.
“I do not!” He finally said, lowering his eyes again, but he continued, “But wish to be taken away from the front lines and aid the wounded Troopers and Jedi with my healing skills!”
“In the worst of the battle, Masters are needed. Many healers we already have!”
“I understand, Master Yoda. Still I must insist. I will not lead any more men into death!”
Yoda took some time as if pondering on the Jedi Master’s true intentions. One could master the art of lie and disguise his will with soft words, but not within the Force. Daryan was being honest and Yoda felt it.
He rose from his small chair and walked calmly to the window facing Coruscant. His small stature projected an enormous shadow throughout the marble floor. Indeed Yoda was a great Jedi, much greater than one could ever evaluate from his appearance. His shadow was coincidentally a perfect metaphor.
Without taking his eyes from the window, Yoda spoke, his voice clearly softened by the much suffering he felt these days.
“Accepted, your request is. To the Medical Centre you must go. A Master Healer you are.”
“Thank you Master Yoda.” Daryan couldn’t help but smile, “I’ll make sure I help those who suffer from this war in a proper way!”
There was nothing else to add, so Daryan turned to leave the room. Still facing the Coruscant busy landscape, however, Yoda still had something to add.
“Right you are about something!” He said.
“What is it, Master?” Daryan turned.
The small Jedi master turned to face Daryan, his facial expression was of tiredness and grief. His words came out like daggers, like a prophecy bound to be fulfilled even before it was pronounced.
“Coming, the dark times are…”
The sun was setting in the artificial horizon of the Republic Capital World, a day was almost over. And so were the days of the Republic.
Jedi Master Yoda knew it, Jedi Master Daryan Sev knew it, still the day was coming, unavoidable, undeniable and, someday, unforgiven.
