Whenever the day ended, Luke would run to see the beautiful twin sunsets. Just like any child, Luke was filled with energy, but his tastes and goals were much different. He had learned to flavor the small details, enjoy the brief natural moments and, for some reason he was still far from knowing, he siphoned what he interpreted as joy from those events.
Little did Luke know that in his veins flowed the ever binding energy of the Force.
Obi-Wan Kenobi observed from far distance. The aging Jedi Master had sworn to protect the little boy but could never endanger his existence by approaching him. The Empire was hunting not only Jedi like himself, but also any Force sensitive child they might encounter. So, although the temptation to train the boy to use his power was consuming Obi-Wan, he knew better than create a situation where the evil Imperial Spies could encounter a Force sensitive boy in such a remote planet like Tatooine.
Still, it was amazing how the Force surrounded the little boy. One day, perhaps...
Obi-Wan looked behind to see the two suns almost fading. He would keep guard until the boy was safely back inside the Moister Farm. There were a lot o perils hidden in the dunes. Not only the native Tusken were rabid hunters with no compassion to avoid killing a small boy, but also dangerous wildlife that had adapted incredibly to the desert life, and picked the night to hunt for prey.
“Luke!” A voice was heard from inside the farm. A man’s voice. Obi-Wan recognized Owen Lars, the boy’s uncle. “There you are, lad… How many times must I tell you not to come outside alone?”
“But, uncle Owen, there’s no one around…” The small boy said without taking his eyes off the suns.
“Come on, I’m shutting the power down soon, you need to rest, my boy!” The man placed his hand over the boy’s shoulder. This wasn’t negotiable.
Obi-Wan admired the zealous protection Owen demonstrated. Sometimes it was exaggerated, then again, there was a whole Empire looking for the boy. Especially one tenebrous agent: Darth Vader…
“Uncle Owen, why do the suns disappear?”
“They must rest!” The man said with a smile, who would not smile from the boy’s questions, ”And so do you! Come on!” Owen grabbed the boy by his waist and tickled his belly.
Between chuckles, the boy looked again at the horizon… and beyond it.
Obi-Wan felt a chill down his spine. The boy was staring at him, kilometers away. He wasn’t just using his eyes, he was using the Force. But, of course he didn’t know.
For a moment that seemed to last ages, Obi-Wan felt the connection and smiled. The Force was strong with the little one. Perhaps the future was bright in the end.
“Someday, little one… I’ll wait!” Obi-Wan whispered.
Owen and Luke got in the first shelter of the farm and disappeared. Soon after, the lights were shut down.
Obi-Wan climbed down the hill and took advantage of the last minutes of light to return home. His job was over for the day. But his life work was far from over.
