Dear Son,
As I write to you I am waiting to embark on a mission I am not sure I will come back from. Though this may sound strange to you now, I am sure you will someday understand what drives someone to his or her death when ideals and honor are at stake. We have allowed the Empire's grasp within this Galaxy for too long.
When this mission I am about to embark is over, hopefully with the outcome we all aim to, you will read this letter in peace and freedom. Those that may not return from it will do so thinking about their wifes, husbands, sons and daughters that deserve to live without the binds of the imperial oppression.
So, yes, I am doing this for you. But don't feel guilty if I don't make it back to you. I took this mission understanding its risks and potential losses. And weighting the possible outcome against allowing the tyranny of the Emperor, then, my son, I would willingly destroy this with my bare hands or die trying. So I am doing this with my perfect conscience and clear perception that, no matter the outcome, I did this with my own free will.
I don't know if you feel proud of me by the time you read this. But I am sure you understand what I did, when I did it. If anything, may this act become an inspiration for you, so that you may never allow anyone to dictate your freedom or lack of it. We are free men and women, not to be compressed against some surreal notion that freedom comes from the thoughts of one single man, no matter how powerful in the Force, no matter how politically influential.
By now you must be thinking I am some sort of activist or ideologist. I am not. I am just a man, a worried father and a caring citizen. I was born during the old Republic and remember your grandfather teaching me the principles of a thinking, proactive and caring society. Though in the end the Republic was but a shadow of the past, plunged into bureaucracy and corruption, nothing prepared us from the power of weapons the Empire brought. Add that the iron fist of their incursions led by Darth Vader, one of which took your mother away from us, and you shall have the main sources of motivation for your father's actions.
Again, my son, I am not writing this letter to make you proud of me. That's something you should ponder and conclude from that reflexion. I just wanted to let you know, from me and no one else, the reasons why I did it. So I may not be there when you grow up, when you meet your first girlfriend, when you join the local Academy, when you fly your first speeder or when you graduate from Flight School as you so often told me you would. I may also not be there when you fail to give you a helping hand, to help you stand when you stumble or to hug you when you have a loss. But I will always be there.
Your mother was a believer in the Force. I've seen so much these days with the likes of Luke Skywalker and the other Rogues, that I began to believe there may be something else driving us, showing us the way.
I bet you heard on how the Rogues destroyed the first Death Star. Well, those big things made by small people are what truly inspire us and make us believe there may yet be a special place reserved for us in History. Perhaps the Force has something to do with that, perhaps not. Either way, we all feel confident we're not fighting for nothing.
Some find strength in some project they have. Others have ideals to fight. Others think about their wives. Well, I am thinking about you right now and I feel this is the right thing to do for you. I am giving you a future. Even if I fail, you know that others will follow me and even if we all fail, our example will lead the way.
Your father.
